JUKE-BOX - performance by katja skušek, nataša skušek, urša perko, mladen
stropnik
original title: >>Juke boks<< / JUKE BOX, length: 30 min, year: 2006
contributors: media – NOX gallery
is a performance taking place in a car covered with a blue canvas sheet with a few openings which allow performers
to gesticulate, offer food and drink, interact with viewers and visitors. this project is a continuation of the culinary
performance entitled “Habibi” which took place last summer at the media nox gallery in Maribor, and where
performers served sweet baklava to the guests through a canvas wall with oriental music playing in the background.
by developing the project we realized that we might do this outside the gallery, attracting a larger audience of all
ages, even those who would otherwise not be found in a gallery setting (e.g. kids). we realized that a car would be
suitable for this purpose, because you can park it in a parking lot without obstructing traffic and put on a fun and
engaging program. as the car provides mobility, we are able to choose from a number of parking lots as our
performance venues. in this context we are particularly interested in the audience’s response, as it has proven to be
very reserved in the gallery, making it hard to engage the viewers. the audience in the gallery is actually a “gallery
crowd” accustomed to observing the conventions of galleries and museums, and passers-by are a more random
audience and therefore perhaps more open to becoming part of the show, which is one of the biggest confirmations
and achievements an artist can hope for.
